Shotokan Karate

Shotokan Karate is a form of unarmed combat – Karate meaning empty hand. Karate as a martial art was cultivated on the Japanese island of Okinawa during the 19th century. After many years, the development of Karate as a self defence gained tremendous popularity, as the island’s Japanese government had prohibited the use of weapons. Because of this national policy, the self defence techniques were developed into a unique Okinawan martial art of Karate. In 1922, Master Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan, introduced Karate to mainland Japan during the first National Athletic Exhibition held in Tokyo. This method became known as Shotokan Karate, and is now one of the most widely practiced and dynamic martial arts in the world today. In theory, the trained karate-ka should have the ability to coordinate mind and body, and unleash tremendous physical power at will. The Australian School of Shotokan Karate proudly honours Master Funakoshi’s legacy by continuing to teach Shotokan Karate in its traditional form.
